UPDATE:

While I am not driving the new Mustang yet, I am still waiting on the paperwork on the title to go through (it was bought out of state and it takes a while for the paperwork to get to the state capital Albany in this case and waiting for the new title to come in so I can take it to the DMV in the spring when I put the car on the road). So I am still driving my 10 year old Monte Carlo. But as I am a model builder on the rare days I have off I picked up this little gem on evil bay.



I am in the process of duplicating my black beauty in 1/25 scale. All I need to duplicate my car is the correct rims my car has and the correct rear wing. I am in the process of getting those items so when done I will have a mini me of my car .

UPDATE:

I am in the process of getting the 17" rims refurbished, they need to be stripped and re painted. I found a guy who can sandblast, paint, and clear em for 40 a rim. I just need to take the wheels off the car, take the tires, valve stems/tire pressure sensors and center caps off and have them done up. While they are off the car I will hopefully use this time to have the brake calipers painted [color=#FF0000]RED[/color] (currently they are a unpainted silver metal color that looks kinda meh). I also will be removing the rear wing to take to a body shop to fix a crack that I found that was caused when the quarter panel was hit before I bought it, and to re do the clearcoat that has scrapes in it that the white car wax has filled in the mentioned scrapes.

If it's a case of who goes furthest before running out of fuel on a motorway/highway run then that could be interesting (in a very mundane, boring kind of way).

If that was the case then I would lose terribly with my Land Rover. Gets about 15mpg on a good day, downhill with a tailwind and the Prius could probably out accelerate me two fold.

But it's a grand way to get there...

Did I mention my other "Car" was a 1949 Ford F-1 that weighs in at 4100 lbs and has it's original engine and running gear and was the second model year of the still running F-Series? 64 years old and still running strong...

I like looking at trucks at shows, it's not what I would personally choose as personal transport (each to their own and all that), but believe me some American barges are very appealing - the likes of Mustangs, Chargers, Camaros, Corvettes etc.

Sadly needs must, particularly as a young driver in the UK...

As I say like looking at them but I've never driven a pickup let alone an F150. Shows aside I did once come across a Dodge Ram coming from the other direction on a mini roundabout on a narrow-ish street. That was, uhm, borderline scary to be honest - I had a Tigra Mk1 at the time which was tiny and low.

And yes I have owned two Tigras and currently a Clio - I'm doing well on the manly front, I know...

Pre '41 vehicles in the US were really small comparatively. You'd be surprised the size difference just between my 1949 Ford Pickup and my 1931 Model A Pickup. When I sit in the cab of the Model A, I feel like I'm in a toy truck. I'm 6' tall and my head brushes up against the headliner if I even shift in the seat and when My son and I both sit in the cab, we're shoulder to shoulder and not in a comfortable way. I have had both of my sons and I 3 across in the bench seat of my '49, shoulders touching but not uncomfortably so. Compare those two to a Dodge Ram or F150 and they look small...

You raise an interesting point in my mind, Cappy, back in the 30s and 40s, people had BIG families, like up to 20 kids... how did they ever manage with those small vehicles? I remember my gramps talking about talking trips from the country into the city in the 1940s with gram and their 6 kids and they'd have two out in the rumble seat, 3 in the back seat, and he and gram in the front seat with the youngest on her lap... driving down treacherous winding dirt roads. How on earth with people with more than 6 kids manage? I guess they might have used pickups with a load of people in the back... safety? LOL Each family should have had a bus back then!

That's funny!! My friend Hugo in Germany has told me about many near misses with his Japanese SUV, which all his friends call "The Tank". At the time, I had a Ford Expedition and he said mine dwarfed his. So I can only imagine how inconvenient a bigger SUV or pickup would be in the UK or many parts of the continent. Well, inconvenient for other drivers!

I'm amazed by the lack of full-size pickups and SUVs in Australia. Ford introduced the F150 and F250 for a while there, but they are no longer available. Neither are Mustangs, for that matter.

They're fairly rare around my area, car shows aside. I think that Ram is the biggest I've seen "in the wild". Not really relevant but I've seen a Chevrolet Blazer (looks like a late Mk1 from my Googling) parked up in a nearby village fairly regularly.

Pickups are fairly common here as workhorse vehicles but we're talking things like Mitsubishi L200's and Toyota Hilux's which are dramatically smaller. Going back some years I did not realise quite how [i]much[/i] smaller they are until seeing some American ones.

Things like Range Rovers are fairly big over here. Though that said there's probably not much in it in width - it's more length-wise that there's a huge difference (as in 1-2m+). Ironically - height aside - things like grand tourers and executive saloons are some of the biggest cars over here, not trucks and SUVs.

Although you might think it's a pain for everyone else, over here it's a pain for the driver too. You'd have to put up with a lot to drive something that size here. Simple fact is that over here stuff just isn't made for vehicles that size.

I can't find it for the life of me but there was a news story some years ago where a footballer (I think) was given a parking ticket for parking his Aston Martin incorrectly. The car was actually parked dead center however it was so wide relative to the space that it was well over the lines on both sides and effectively took 3 spaces.

UPDATE: I got the local inspection done car passed with flying colors. I also got the sales tax paid too. All I have to do now is to get insurance on it and mail proof of inspection, sales tax, insurance, the application, and payment for the paperwork and temp tag. Once I get the tag I drive it to the out of area inspection place. Then I just wait for the paperwork to get back then off I go to the DMV.
